Pet’s Name: Duma
Biography:
We're looking for a special new home for our beloved dog, Duma.
This has been an incredibly difficult decision for our family, but after two bite incidents involving our young child over the past year, we've concluded that we can no longer safely meet Duma's needs in a home with small children. Our goal is to find him a home where he can enjoy his senior years with someone who understands him and can provide the environment where he'll thrive.
About Duma
- 11-year-old neutered male Ridgeback/Hound mix
- Approximately 65 lbs.
- Located in Washington, DC
- Up to date on all vaccinations (annual wellness exam completed July 27)
- Microchipped
Duma is a friendly, affectionate dog who genuinely loves people. He gets excited to meet everyone and is famous for his signature "lean"—if you're petting him, he'll happily lean his whole body against you for more attention. He enjoys daily walks and knows a variety of commands, including sit, stay, wait, down, roll over, crate, spot, and "free."
He is house-trained, walks well on a leash, and was crate-trained earlier in life, although he hasn't needed a crate in years.
Health
Duma has arthritis in his rear legs, which is managed with gabapentin. He also receives Dasuquin, fish oil, and vitamin E supplements. He is otherwise in good health and receives regular veterinary care through Friendship Hospital for Animals in Washington, DC.
The Home He Needs
We believe Duma would do best in an active adult household with:
- No small children
- No other pets
- Someone willing to continue managing his arthritis and give him regular walks and companionship
While Duma loves people, he does have separation anxiety and can become overly excited when greeting visitors.
Important Behavioral History
We want to be completely transparent so Duma can be placed safely.
During the past year, Duma bit our young child on two separate occasions. In both cases, our child approached him from behind while Duma was not expecting the interaction. The first incident occurred while Duma was lying down and our child lifted his rear legs. The second occurred when our child hugged him around his hindquarters from behind while he was standing. These incidents have led us to conclude that Duma is not a safe fit for a home with young children.
Duma has also become selective with other dogs as he's gotten older. While he has a few canine companions he enjoys playing with, he can react negatively when unfamiliar dogs approach him, so we believe he should be the only pet in his new home.
What Comes With Duma
We'll send him with his dog bed, blankets, medications, vitamins, bowls, leashes, poop bags, and other supplies to help make the transition as smooth as possible. We're also willing to transport him up to 100 miles to the right home.
